Missouri River Flooding 2011
We received an interesting and informative forwarded email
a couple days ago that gave another
perspective on how much land is actually under water. Below is how the email
read:
Good morning. This past Saturday (July 2nd), I was able to go
up in a plane with
Scott Olson to look at the flooding damage between Omaha and just north
of Onawa.
Aerial photos show the water well, but figuring out where all the damage
is at from those pictures is difficult if you don't know what it looked
like before. Attached is a map which I have pieced together. I have
Pottawattamie & Harrison County in Iowa and Washington and Burt Counties
in Nebraska. I attempted to get the maps scanned to the correct size,
so they would line up, but they are not perfect. I have colored yellow
all of the area that was covered in water when I was up in the air on
Saturday. It may not be perfect, but I don't think I am to far off.
Between Omaha and Onawa, there are about 148 sections of ground that are
colored yellow. Each section has 640 acres, and if you estimate that
ground is about 80% tillable, that will equate to about 75,776 acres in
this 40-50 mile stretch of the river that has been flooded out at this
point. This is about 2/3rds of what some of the early maps from the
core showed which I believe is due to some of the dikes that have been
built at various places.
